Tips for capturing sunrise photos with your smartphone

You can photograph the Mount Batur viewpoint with your own phone. These are general phone habits, not a promise about the light on a given morning.

On your own phone

• Clean the lens. A cold morning fogs glass quickly.
• Lock exposure on the sky, then brighten the foreground if the phone allows it. A bright sun and a dark lava field will otherwise crush one of them.
• Brace the phone on a knee or the jeep rather than shooting only at arm’s length.
• Shoot a short burst as the sun clears the ridge. One frame is easy to miss.
